- Sound Blaster 16: Added a hardware-compatible MPU-401 UART MIDI interface through its game port, allowing gamers to plug external MIDI synthesizers directly into their PCs without buying costly dedicated interface cards.
- Wave Blaster Expansion: Provided a wavetable daughterboard connector on the sound card. Gamers could attach sample-based synthesizers directly to the Sound Blaster, delivering the realistic, acoustic instrument playback of professional General MIDI gear at a fraction of the cost.

The Sound Blaster era solidified MIDI as an essential tool in game design.
