Understanding Retrigger Cancellation and Mask Time
When a bass drum beater strikes a mesh head or acoustic trigger pad, the initial hit produces a primary transient spike, quickly followed by secondary vibrations and beater bounce. Retrigger cancellation works by ignoring any signal fluctuations that occur within a specified window of milliseconds (ms) immediately following the primary strike.
If this window is set too low, micro-bounces and head resonance trigger phantom notes ("machine-gunning"). If set too high, deliberate high-speed strokes are blocked, leading to dropped notes during fast double-bass bursts.
Calculating Millisecond Spacing for High Tempos
To ensure the trigger module does not ignore genuine consecutive hits, the retrigger cancellation window must always be shorter than the time between alternating foot strokes.
- At 200 BPM (16th notes): The time between individual alternating strokes is 75 ms.

Tighten the kick pad head to reduce slack, and use physical dampening (such as kick patches or foam muffling) to shorten the mechanical decay of each impact. Keep beaters adjusted to minimize physical recoil flutter.
- Lower Scan Time / Peak Time: Set the trigger's "Scan Time" (the window the module uses to measure peak velocity) to a low value, typically between 1.0 ms and 2.5 ms. A shorter scan time registers the transient faster, allowing the retrigger process to begin and clear sooner.
- Set Retrigger Cancellation to Zero: Temporarily lower the retrigger cancellation (or mask time) to its minimum setting (0 to 2 ms).
- Isolate Single-Foot Hits: Play steady, powerful single-pedal strokes at moderate speed. If you hear secondary flutter hits or double-triggering on single strokes, increase the retrigger value by 1 ms increments until every single strike registers exactly one clean MIDI note.
