Sync Audio Narration with Slides in LibreOffice Impress

Synchronizing narration audio tracks with slide timings in LibreOffice Impress allows you to create automated, professional presentations with perfectly timed voiceovers. This guide explains how to prepare your audio files, apply narration to individual slides, use the Rehearse Timings feature to establish accurate slide durations, and ensure smooth playback throughout your presentation.

Step 1: Prepare Your Narration Audio

For the most reliable synchronization, divide your narration into individual audio files corresponding to each specific slide.

Step 2: Assign Audio to Individual Slides

Attaching sound directly via the Slide Transition panel ensures that audio triggers automatically when a slide appears.

  1. Open your presentation in LibreOffice Impress.
  2. Select the first slide in the Slides pane on the left.
  3. Open the Slide Transition deck from the right sidebar (the icon depicting a slide with a star).
  4. Under the Modify transition section, locate the Sound drop-down menu.
  5. Select Other sound… from the bottom of the list.
  6. Browse to your local storage, select the corresponding audio file for that slide, and click Open.
  7. Repeat this process for each slide requiring voiceover narration.

Step 3: Set Automatic Slide Timings

To advance slides automatically once the audio finishes:

  1. Stay in the Slide Transition sidebar for the selected slide.
  2. In the Advance slide section, select the Automatically after option.
  3. Enter the duration in seconds corresponding to the length of the audio track (add 1–2 seconds for a natural pause before transition).
  4. Apply these settings to each slide individually to match their respective audio lengths.

Step 4: Fine-Tune with the Rehearse Timings Tool

If you prefer to set the transition timings interactively while listening to your narration:

  1. Click on the Slide Show menu at the top.
  2. Select Rehearse Timings.
  3. Impress will launch the presentation in full-screen mode with a timer displayed in the bottom-left corner.
  4. Let the slide display for the full duration of your narration, then click or press the Spacebar to advance to the next slide.
  5. Impress automatically records the time elapsed for each slide and applies it directly to your slide transition settings.

Step 5: Test and Export Your Presentation

  1. Press F5 (or go to Slide Show > Start from First Slide) to review the entire presentation from start to finish.
  2. Verify that the audio starts promptly and that slides transition naturally without cutting off the end of any spoken words.
  3. Save your file in the native ODP format to preserve all embedded settings and links.
