Opening PowerPoint SmartArt in LibreOffice Impress

When Microsoft PowerPoint files containing SmartArt graphics are opened in LibreOffice Impress, the dynamic SmartArt diagrams are automatically converted into native, grouped shapes. While LibreOffice Impress preserves most of the visual layout, text, and basic color schemes, the interactive SmartArt functionality is lost. This article explains how the rendering engine handles these graphics, the visual discrepancies you may encounter, and how to edit the converted objects.

Conversion to Grouped Shapes

LibreOffice does not have a dedicated SmartArt engine equivalent to Microsoft Office. Instead, the import filter reads the underlying DrawingML definitions in the .pptx file and recreates the diagram as a collection of standard vector shapes grouped together.

Because it is converted to grouped shapes: * The original spatial layout (such as hierarchy, process flows, or matrix layouts) is generally preserved. * The interactive text pane used in PowerPoint to add or remove nodes automatically is not available. * Adding new steps or shapes requires manual drawing, resizing, and alignment.

Visual Fidelity and Rendering Accuracy

The accuracy of the visual rendering depends heavily on the complexity of the original SmartArt design:

• Basic Layouts: Standard 2D diagrams—such as simple lists, cycle processes, and organizational charts—usually render with high accuracy.
• Colors and Gradients: Flat colors and simple linear gradients translate well. Complex multi-stop gradients or proprietary Office theme color mappings may appear slightly altered.
• 3D Effects and Textures: Advanced effects like bevels, rotations, perspective angles, and specialized 3D surfaces are typically flattened or simplified to standard 2D vector approximations.
• Text Formatting: Text inside shapes generally aligns correctly, but slight font metric differences between platforms (e.g., Windows fonts on a Linux installation) can cause unexpected line wraps or text overflowing the shape boundaries.

Editing Converted SmartArt

Once imported into LibreOffice Impress, you can modify the graphic using standard drawing tools:

1. Direct Text Editing: Double-click on any text element within the graphic to edit the wording directly.
2. Ungrouping Objects: Right-click the graphic and select Group > Ungroup (or press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+G) to break the diagram into individual shapes. This allows you to reposition elements, adjust custom colors, or delete specific nodes.
3. Resizing: You can resize the entire grouped object proportionally, though individual text sizes inside shapes may need manual adjustment depending on your scaling settings.

Saving and Round-Trip Compatibility

If you edit the diagram in LibreOffice Impress and save the presentation back to the .pptx format: * The graphic is saved as standard PowerPoint drawing shapes, not as an editable SmartArt object. * If reopened in Microsoft PowerPoint, the diagram will remain as fixed shapes and will no longer offer the native SmartArt Design tools. * If you open a PowerPoint file in Impress, make changes elsewhere in the slide without touching the SmartArt, and save it back to .pptx, modern versions of LibreOffice attempt to preserve the original SmartArt definition for compatibility.
