Master Slides and Templates in LibreOffice Impress
LibreOffice Impress manages presentation design consistency and reusability through two core features: Master Slides and Presentation Templates. Master slides define the universal layout, background, fonts, and object positioning for slides within a single presentation, while templates package these master slides, custom styles, and pre-formatted content into reusable files for future projects. Understanding how to access, edit, and organize these components allows users to streamline their workflow and maintain unified visual branding.
Working with Master Slides
A Master Slide acts as the underlying design blueprint for the slides in your presentation. Any change made to a master slide—such as adding a corporate logo, changing the background color, or adjusting title typography—automatically applies to all presentation slides assigned to that master.
Accessing and Editing Master Slides
- Switch to Master View: Navigate to View > Master Slide from the top menu bar. The workspace switches to show the master slide layout, displaying placeholders for titles, body text, dates, footers, and slide numbers.
- Modify Global Elements: Adjust the font size, font family, bullet styles, and color schemes in the placeholders. Insert graphics or watermarks directly onto the master slide to make them appear on every slide.
- Exit Master View: Click Close Master View on the Master View toolbar or select View > Normal to return to standard editing.
Managing Multiple Master Slides
Impress supports the use of multiple master slides within a single presentation: * Open the Master Slides deck in the Sidebar on the right. * Create a new master slide by right-clicking in the slide thumbnail pane while in Master View and selecting New Master. * Assign specific master slides to individual slides by right-clicking a slide thumbnail in Normal View, selecting Change Slide Master, or choosing a layout directly from the Sidebar.
Managing Presentation Templates
Presentation templates in LibreOffice Impress (saved in the
.otp format) serve as container files that store one or
more master slides, default styles, custom color palettes, and
boilerplate slide structures.
Creating and Saving a Template
- Build a presentation with the desired master slides, custom layouts, and formatting.
- Go to File > Templates > Save As Template…
(or press
Shift + F11). - Enter a name for the template.
- Select a template category (such as My Templates or Presentations) to determine where it will be stored.
- (Optional) Check Set as default template if you want Impress to load this layout every time a new presentation is created.
- Click Save.
The Template Manager
The Template Manager is the central hub for organizing presentation
templates: * Open the Manager: Navigate to File
> Templates > Manage Templates (or press
Ctrl + Shift + N). * Import/Export: Use
the buttons in the manager to import external .otp or
PowerPoint .potx files, or export custom templates to share
with other users. * Set Defaults: Right-click any
template and select Set as Default to automatically
apply it to blank presentations, or Reset Default
Template to restore Impress’s initial settings. *
Organize: Move templates between custom categories or
delete outdated designs.
Starting a Presentation from a Template
When launching LibreOffice Impress, the template selection dialog
opens automatically. To open a template from an active session, select
File > New > Templates…, choose the desired
template from your library, and click Open. Impress
creates an untitled .odp document containing all predefined
master slides and formatting, leaving the original template file
intact.
