LibreOffice Writer Tab Stops and Leader Dots Guide
Tab stops and leader dots in LibreOffice Writer offer a precise way to align text horizontally without creating complex tables. By setting custom tab stops—such as left, right, centered, or decimal—and pairing them with leader dots (fill characters), you can effortlessly create clean layouts for documents like tables of contents, menus, resumes, and price lists.
Understanding Tab Stops in LibreOffice Writer
A tab stop is a predetermined horizontal position on a page where the cursor stops after pressing the Tab key. By default, LibreOffice Writer places standard tab stops every 0.5 inches (or 1.27 cm), but you can create custom tab stops to control alignment precisely:
- Left: Aligns the beginning of the text to the tab stop.
- Right: Aligns the end of the text to the tab stop, making it ideal for right-aligned dates or numbers.
- Centered: Centers the text directly over the tab stop position.
- Decimal: Aligns numbers at a decimal point (period or comma), ensuring numerical columns align correctly regardless of the number of digits.
Understanding Leader Dots (Fill Characters)
Leader dots are repeating characters—usually dots, dashes, or solid lines—that bridge the empty horizontal space created by a tab jump. They guide the reader’s eye across the page from the text on the left to the corresponding information on the right.
Common uses include: * Connecting chapter titles to page numbers. * Linking menu items to prices. * Connecting form labels to signature lines (using underscore fill characters).
