LibreOffice Mouse Customization and Middle-Click Paste

LibreOffice provides several configuration options to customize mouse behavior, enabling users to streamline document navigation, editing, and text insertion. This guide covers how to configure the middle mouse button for functions like clipboard pasting and autoscrolling, as well as how to utilize mouse shortcuts, wheel navigation, and selection modes across the office suite.

Configuring the Middle Mouse Button

You can define the primary action of the middle mouse button (or scroll wheel click) directly within LibreOffice settings:

1. Navigate to Tools > Options (on macOS, go to LibreOffice > Preferences).
2. In the left sidebar, expand the LibreOffice section and select View.
3. Locate the Mouse section on the right pane.
4. Use the Middle mouse button dropdown menu to select one of three behaviors:
   • No function: Disables actions assigned to the middle click within the document area.
   • Automatic scrolling: Clicking the middle button and moving the mouse enables smooth, directional scrolling across large documents and spreadsheets.
   • Paste clipboard: Clicking the middle button pastes the current clipboard contents directly at the position of the mouse cursor, rather than the text insertion cursor.

Note on Linux/X11 systems: When set to paste, LibreOffice typically interacts with the system’s primary selection buffer, allowing you to highlight text anywhere in the OS and immediately middle-click to insert it into your document.

Mouse Wheel Navigation and Zoom Controls

LibreOffice supports standard modifier keys combined with the mouse scroll wheel for rapid navigation:

• Zooming: Hold Ctrl while scrolling the mouse wheel up or down to zoom in or out of documents, spreadsheets, and presentation slides.
• Horizontal Scrolling: Hold Shift while scrolling the mouse wheel to scroll horizontally, which is particularly useful in wide LibreOffice Calc sheets.
• Page-by-Page Navigation: In LibreOffice Writer, holding Alt while scrolling allows navigation by page increments depending on your desktop environment settings.

Mouse Selection and Editing Behaviors

LibreOffice includes built-in mouse interaction shortcuts for selecting and placing content:

• Multi-Click Text Selection:
  • Double-click: Selects the current word.
  • Triple-click: Selects the entire sentence.
  • Quadruple-click: Selects the entire paragraph.
• Block (Rectangular) Selection: Hold Alt and drag the left mouse button in LibreOffice Writer to select a vertical rectangular block of text across multiple lines, ignoring standard line wrapping.
• Hyperlink Activation: By default, hyperlinks require Ctrl + Left Click to open, preventing accidental clicks while editing. This can be modified under Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Security > Options, where you can uncheck “Ctrl-click required to open hyperlinks” to allow standard single-click opening.
• Direct Cursor Mode: In Writer, navigate to Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids and enable Direct Cursor. This allows you to click anywhere in an empty area of a page to automatically insert spaces, tabs, or line breaks and immediately begin typing at that exact position.
