LibreOffice Impress Master Slide Changes

Modifying the Master Slide in LibreOffice Impress allows presenters to apply global visual updates instantly across an entire presentation. By editing the background design on the master layer, any slide assigned to that master automatically adopts the changes, eliminating the need to manually format individual slides.

1. Slide Background Fills

Any change made to the master slide’s background fill properties instantly updates every slide using that master. These properties include: * Solid Colors: Applying a global base color to all slides. * Gradients: Establishing multi-color transitions across the background. * Bitmaps and Images: Setting a static full-screen background photo, texture, or pattern. * Hatches and Patterns: Applying line-based or geometric fill designs.

2. Static Graphics and Watermarks

Any visual object drawn or pasted onto the master slide layer automatically displays in the background of all slides: * Logos and Branding: Company or project logos placed in corners or headers. * Decorative Shapes: Banners, accent lines, dividing borders, or colored content blocks. * Watermarks: Low-opacity text or vector icons layered behind slide content.

The structural styling and placement of automated presentation metadata propagate across all slides: * Slide Number Fields: Font family, size, color, and location of the page count. * Date and Time Elements: Formatting and position of the automated date field. * Footer Text: Position, alignment, and styling of fixed footer text boxes.

4. Default Typography and Text Styles

While text content remains unique to individual slides, the underlying formatting rules propagate automatically: * Title and Subtitle Formatting: Default font typeface, size, weight, alignment, and color. * Outline and Bullet Hierarchies: Custom bullet points, numbering styles, indentation levels, and paragraph spacing for body content.

Managing Propagation and Overrides

To apply these changes, open the presentation and navigate to View > Master Slide. Once changes are saved, exiting the master view updates all slides linked to that specific master.

If a specific slide does not reflect these global background changes, it usually indicates that a direct format override was applied to that slide individually. Right-clicking the individual slide and resetting its background properties to default restores the automatic inheritance from the Master Slide.
