LibreOffice Calc and Microsoft Excel are two of the most widely used spreadsheet programs today, but they cater to different user needs and budgets. While Excel is a commercial powerhouse known for advanced data processing and cloud collaboration, Calc is a free, open-source alternative focused on privacy and essential spreadsheet tasks. Pricing and Licensing
The most prominent difference is the cost. LibreOffice Calc is completely free and open-source software distributed under the Mozilla Public License. Users can download, install, and use it across unlimited devices without subscription fees. Microsoft Excel is commercial proprietary software, available either as a one-time purchase (Office Home & Student/Business) or via a monthly/annual Microsoft 365 subscription.
User Interface
Microsoft Excel uses the modern “Ribbon” interface, which groups tools and commands into intuitive, visually rich tabs. LibreOffice Calc retains a more traditional, classic menu-and-toolbar layout similar to older versions of Office. While Calc does offer an optional “NotebookBar” that mimics the Ribbon, Excel’s interface generally feels more polished and modern out of the box.
