How to Insert Multimedia in LibreOffice Impress

Adding multimedia elements such as images, audio, and video to a LibreOffice Impress presentation enhances visual engagement and dynamic delivery. This guide provides straightforward instructions on how to insert different media types into your slides using the top menu, slide placeholders, and the sidebar gallery, as well as how to configure their playback and positioning.

Inserting Images

  1. Select the slide where you want the image to appear.
  2. Navigate to the top menu bar and click Insert > Image…
  3. Browse your local files, select the image format (e.g., PNG, JPEG, SVG), and click Open.
  4. Click and drag the selection handles on the image corners to resize, or drag the center to reposition it on the slide.

Alternatively, you can drag and drop an image file directly from your file manager onto the slide canvas.

Inserting Audio or Video Files

  1. Select the target slide.
  2. Click Insert in the main menu, hover over Media, and select Audio or Video…
  3. Locate your media file (common formats include MP4, AVI, MP3, WAV, and OGG) and click Open.
  4. A media placeholder will appear on your slide. When selected, the Media Playback toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen, allowing you to preview playback, adjust volume, or pause the media.

Note: Ensure your operating system has the appropriate codecs installed so LibreOffice can decode the chosen media container and stream.

Using Slide Layout Placeholders

If your slide uses a layout that includes content placeholders (such as “Title, Content”):

  1. Click directly on the relevant icon inside the placeholder box:
    • Insert Image icon to add a picture.
    • Insert Audio or Video icon to import media.
  2. Choose your file from the file browser. The media will automatically scale to fit the placeholder bounds.

  2. Browse through categories such as Sounds, Diagrams, or Shapes.
  3. Click and drag the desired asset directly onto your slide.
