Hatching and Bitmap Fills in LibreOffice Draw

LibreOffice Draw allows users to customize the interior of closed 2D shapes using various fill styles, including hatching patterns and bitmap textures. This guide covers the built-in hatching and bitmap options available in the software, how they function, and the methods used to customize, import, and apply these patterns to any closed object.

Applying Fills to Closed Shapes

To change the fill of any closed shape (such as rectangles, polygons, circles, or custom closed curves):

  1. Select the shape in the workspace.
  2. Open the Properties deck in the sidebar or right-click the shape and select Area.
  3. In the Area tab/section, set the Fill dropdown to either Hatch or Bitmap.

Hatching Fill Patterns

Hatching fills consist of repeating vector line patterns that scale cleanly without pixelation. They are commonly used in technical diagrams, blueprints, and architectural sketches.

Built-in Hatching Types

LibreOffice Draw provides several default hatching presets: * Single Line Hatching: Parallel lines set at standard angles (such as 0°, 45°, or 90°) with uniform spacing. * Crossed Hatching (Cross-Hatch): Two intersecting sets of parallel lines creating grid or diamond patterns. * Triple Hatching: Three intersecting sets of lines creating complex mesh patterns.

Hatching Properties and Customization

Users can modify existing presets or create custom hatching patterns by adjusting the following parameters in the Area > Hatching menu: * Line Type: Solid, dashed, or dotted lines. * Line Color: Any standard or custom palette color. * Distance: The spacing between individual lines. * Angle: The rotation angle of the hatching lines (from 0° to 360°). * Line Style/Count: Single, double, or triple line configurations. * Background Color: An optional solid background fill placed beneath the hatching lines.

Bitmap Fill Patterns

Bitmap fills apply raster or vector image textures across the surface area of a closed shape.

Built-in Bitmap Presets

LibreOffice Draw includes a variety of pre-installed texture patterns, including: * Materials and Surfaces: Wood, brick, stone, marble, metal, and concrete textures. * Abstract and Graphic Textures: Paper, canvas, water, floral patterns, and geometric tiles. * Studio Fills: Colored grids, dots, and seamless background patterns.

Customizing and Importing Bitmaps

Through the Area > Bitmap settings, users can customize how bitmaps render on shapes: * Importing Custom Bitmaps: Users can import custom image files (including PNG, JPEG, SVG, and BMP) to use as fill patterns. * Tiling: Repeats the bitmap across the shape. You can adjust the horizontal and vertical size, offset percentages, and alignment anchors (e.g., top-left, center). * Stretching (AutoFit): Scales a single instance of the image to completely fill the boundaries of the shape regardless of its aspect ratio. * Cropping and Position Offsets: Shifts the starting position of the bitmap relative to the shape’s origin.
