Freeze Rows and Columns in LibreOffice Calc

Freezing rows and columns in LibreOffice Calc allows you to lock header information in place so it remains visible as you scroll through large datasets. This guide covers how to freeze the top row, the first column, or a combination of custom rows and columns, as well as how to unfreeze them when no longer needed.

Freeze the Top Row

1. Open your spreadsheet in LibreOffice Calc.
2. Click on View in the top menu bar.
3. Hover over Freeze Cells and select Freeze First Row.
4. The first row will now stay fixed at the top as you scroll down through the sheet.

Freeze the First Column

1. Click on View in the top menu bar.
2. Hover over Freeze Cells and select Freeze First Column.
3. Column A will remain locked on the left side as you scroll horizontally to the right.

Freeze Custom Rows and Columns Simultaneously

To freeze multiple rows, multiple columns, or both at the same time: 1. Select the cell immediately below the last row and immediately to the right of the last column you want to freeze. For example, to freeze both Row 1 and Column A, select cell B2. To freeze Rows 1–2 and Columns A–B, select cell C3. 2. Click on View in the top menu bar. 3. Select Freeze Rows and Columns (or navigate to Freeze Cells > Freeze Rows and Columns depending on your LibreOffice version). 4. A dark line will appear indicating the locked boundaries.

How to Unfreeze Rows and Columns

1. Click on View in the top menu bar.
2. Click on Freeze Rows and Columns (or navigate to Freeze Cells > Freeze Rows and Columns) to uncheck the option.
3. All locked panes will be removed, restoring standard scrolling behavior.
