Export LibreOffice Master Document to Single PDF
LibreOffice Writer allows you to assemble large projects by combining
multiple sub-documents into a single master document
(.odm). When you are ready to publish, you can easily
compile and export all linked files into one unified PDF directly from
the master document interface. This guide walks you through the exact
steps to update your links and generate a complete, cohesive PDF
file.
Step 1: Open and Update the Master Document
Before exporting, you must ensure that the master document pulls the latest content from all linked sub-documents.
- Open your Master Document (
.odmfile) in LibreOffice Writer. - If prompted to update all links, click Yes.
- If not prompted, open the Navigator sidebar by
pressing
F5(or go to View > Navigator). - In the Navigator, click the Update icon (the circular arrows) and select Update All. This synchronizes all text, tables, and formatting from your sub-documents.
Step 2: Export to PDF
Once the document is fully updated, you can initiate the export process.
- Click on File in the top menu.
- Hover over Export As and select Export as PDF… (Alternatively, click the Export Directly as PDF icon on the toolbar if you do not need to adjust settings).
- The PDF Options dialog box will appear.
Step 3: Configure PDF Settings
In the PDF Options dialog, configure the settings according to your needs:
- Range: Ensure All is selected under the General tab to include the entire master document and all sub-documents.
- Images: Choose your desired image compression (e.g., Lossless compression or JPEG quality percentage) to balance file size and visual clarity.
- Structure: Check Export bookmarks and Export outline if you want the PDF reader to display a clickable table of contents based on your document headings.
- Layout: Under the Initial View tab, you can set how the PDF opens (e.g., Page only, Bookmarks and page, or specific zoom levels).
Step 4: Save the Unified PDF
- Click the Export button at the bottom of the dialog box.
- Choose the destination folder on your computer.
- Enter a file name for your unified document.
- Click Save.
LibreOffice will process the master document along with all embedded and linked sub-documents, outputting a single, continuous PDF file with consistent page numbering and formatting.
