Book Gutter Margin Settings in LibreOffice Writer

Configuring gutter margins in LibreOffice Writer is essential for preparing book layouts for professional printing and binding. A gutter adds extra space to the binding edge of a page to ensure text is not obscured after the book is bound. This guide outlines the specific page layout settings, gutter placement options, and margin configurations available in LibreOffice Writer for print-ready documents.

Accessing Gutter Settings

All gutter and margin options are managed through the Page Style dialog:

1. Open your document in LibreOffice Writer.
2. Navigate to Format in the top menu and select Page Style (or right-click anywhere on the page and choose Page Style).
3. Click on the Page tab.

Page Layout Modes for Books

In the Layout Settings section of the Page tab, the Page layout dropdown menu determines how margins and gutters are distributed across sheets:

• Mirrored: The standard setting for double-sided printed books. When selected, the left and right margins become “Inner” and “Outer” margins. The gutter is automatically applied to the inner edge of every page (the right side of even pages and the left side of odd pages).
• Right and left: Treats both odd and even pages independently, applying standard left and right margins without alternating binding edges.
• Only right / Only left: Formats the document entirely as right-hand (recto) or left-hand (verso) pages, primarily used for specific single-sided publishing formats.

Gutter Configuration Options

Within the Margins section of the Page tab, LibreOffice Writer provides two primary controls for the gutter:

• Gutter: A numerical field where you specify the exact width to add for the binding (e.g., 0.5 inches or 1.25 cm). This value is added on top of your existing margin settings to prevent text from falling into the fold.
• Gutter position: A dropdown menu that defines the axis of the binding:
  • Left: The default setting for standard books, novels, and left-to-right reading formats. When combined with the “Mirrored” layout, LibreOffice automatically shifts the gutter to the inner margin on alternating pages.
  • Top: Used for top-bound publications, such as calendars, flipbooks, or legal notepads. When selected, the gutter width is added directly to the top margin of each page.

Margin and Gutter Interaction

The gutter value in LibreOffice Writer does not replace the inner margin; it expands it. The total space between the edge of the printed text and the physical cut of the page at the spine equals the Inner Margin + Gutter.

To maintain visual balance across a two-page spread, set your Inner and Outer margins to equal widths, then add your required Gutter depth. This ensures the visible margins appear symmetrical once the book is fully bound.
