Bezier Curve Editing in LibreOffice Draw
LibreOffice Draw provides a comprehensive vector editing environment that enables users to create and modify custom shapes using Bezier curves and point manipulation. By utilizing the dedicated Points toolbar, users can alter existing paths, convert standard geometric shapes into editable curves, manage node types, and adjust tangent control handles for precise curvature control. This article details the mechanics of node editing, handle behaviors, and path transformation tools available in the software.
Activating the Point Editing Mode
To edit curves and vector points in LibreOffice Draw, an object must first be recognized as a path or curve.
- Select an existing curve, polygon, or freeform line. If you are using a basic shape (such as a rectangle or ellipse), right-click the object and select Convert > To Curve or To Polygon.
- Enable point editing by pressing F8 on your keyboard, clicking the Points icon on the Standard toolbar, or selecting Edit > Points.
- When active, the object displays its constituent nodes (points), and the Edit Points toolbar appears.
Understanding Node Types
LibreOffice Draw categorizes curve nodes into three distinct types to control how segments connect:
- Corner Point: Both control handles move independently. This allows you to create sharp angles, abrupt directional changes, and cusps along the path.
- Smooth Transition: The control handles are locked in a straight line relative to each other (180 degrees apart), ensuring a continuous, unbroken curve through the point. However, each handle can have a different length, allowing for asymmetrical curve tension on either side.
- Symmetric Transition: The control handles are locked in both angle and length. Moving or resizing one handle automatically mirrors the transformation on the opposite handle, producing an evenly balanced curve.
You can switch a selected node between these behaviors using the corresponding buttons on the Edit Points toolbar.
Manipulating Control Handles
When you click on a node along a Bezier curve, one or two control handles (tangents) appear, terminated by small circular or square grips:
- Direction: Dragging the control grip alters the angle of the curve as it enters or exits the node.
- Tension and Depth: Extending the handle farther from the node increases the curve’s arc and weight, while shortening the handle flattens the curve toward a straight line.
- Independent Adjustment: Holding the
Shiftkey while dragging a handle temporarily breaks the symmetry or angle lock, allowing for rapid corner adjustments without permanently switching the node mode manually.
Modifying Paths and Points
The Edit Points toolbar provides several direct manipulation functions:
- Insert Points: Activates a mode where clicking anywhere along an existing path segment adds a new node without altering the shape of the curve.
- Delete Points: Removes the selected node(s). The path automatically recalculates to bridge the gap between the remaining adjacent points.
- Move Points: Clicking and dragging any node relocates its position in the 2D workspace while preserving the relative orientation of its control handles.
- Split Curve: Separates a path at the selected node, turning a single continuous line into two disconnected sub-paths.
- Close Path: Connects the start and end nodes of an open line with a new segment, turning it into a closed shape that can accept color and pattern fills.
- Convert to Curve / Line: Changes the segment between two points from a curved Bezier line to a straight vector segment, or vice versa.
