What Are Kdenlive Proxy Clips and How to Enable Them
Video editing can heavily tax your computer’s resources, especially when working with high-resolution footage like 4K or high-frame-rate files. This article explains what proxy clips are—low-resolution placeholder videos used during the editing process—and provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to enable and configure them in the open-source video editor Kdenlive to achieve a smooth, lag-free timeline playback.
What Are Proxy Clips?
Proxy clips are lower-resolution, highly compressed copies of your original video footage that Kdenlive generates automatically. Editing ultra-high-definition video files directly requires immense CPU and GPU processing power, often resulting in stuttering, dropped frames, and lag during timeline playback.
By using proxy clips, Kdenlive temporarily replaces your heavy original files with lightweight versions while you edit, cut, and apply transitions. This significantly improves editing performance and preview speeds. When you are ready to export your final video, Kdenlive automatically swaps the low-resolution proxies back to your original, full-quality files, ensuring your final render is of the highest quality.
How to Enable Proxy Clips in Kdenlive
You can enable proxy clips globally for all future projects, for a specific active project, or manually for individual video files.
Method 1: Enable Globally for All New Projects
To make Kdenlive automatically generate proxy clips for every new project you start:
- Open Kdenlive.
- Go to the top menu and select Settings > Configure Kdenlive (on macOS, select Kdenlive > Preferences).
- In the settings window, click on the Proxy Clips tab in the left sidebar.
- Check the box next to Enable Proxy Clips.
- Optional: You can set a size threshold (e.g., generate proxies only for videos larger than 1000 pixels wide) to prevent Kdenlive from making proxies for files that are already small and easy to edit.
- Click Apply and then OK.
Method 2: Enable for the Current Project
If you have an existing project open and want to enable proxies for it:
- Click on Project in the top menu bar.
- Select Project Settings.
- In the window that appears, navigate to the Proxy tab.
- Check the box to Enable Proxy Clips.
- Click OK.
Method 3: Enable for Individual Clips Manually
If you prefer to only create proxies for specific heavy clips in your project:
- Go to your Project Bin (where your imported media is located).
- Right-click on the specific video clip you want to proxy.
- Hover over or select Proxy Clip from the context menu.
- Kdenlive will begin rendering a proxy for that file in the background. A small yellow “P” icon will appear on the clip’s thumbnail once the process is complete, indicating that the proxy version is currently active on your timeline.
