Use Kdenlive Safe Areas to Prevent Cut Off Text

This guide explains how to enable and utilize the “Safe Areas” overlay in the Kdenlive project monitor. By following these steps, you will learn how to position your titles, subtitles, and essential graphics within the safe zones to prevent them from being cut off on different television and projection screens.

Step 1: Locate the Project Monitor

Open your project in Kdenlive and locate the Project Monitor window, which displays the preview of your active video timeline.

Step 2: Enable the Safe Areas Overlay

You can turn on the Safe Areas overlay using one of two quick methods: * The Right-Click Method: Right-click anywhere inside the Project Monitor preview screen. In the context menu that appears, hover over Overlay and select Safe Zones. * The Toolbar Method: Click on the Overlay drop-down icon (which resembles a grid or target) located in the toolbar at the bottom of the Project Monitor, and select Safe Zones from the list.

This is the crucial zone for your text.

Step 4: Align Your Text

Select your title clip on the timeline or open the Title Clip editor. Position, scale, and align your text elements so that they sit entirely within the innermost rectangle (the Title Safe Zone).

By keeping your text inside this inner boundary, you guarantee that your titles will not be clipped by the bezels or overscan settings of various consumer television screens and monitors. Once your alignment is complete, you can toggle the overlay off using the same menu steps before exporting your final video.
