Split Stereo Audio into Mono in Kdenlive

This article explains how to configure Kdenlive to automatically split stereo audio tracks into two separate mono channels when importing media. By adjusting a few key settings in Kdenlive’s configuration menu and clip properties, you can streamline your audio editing workflow and manage individual left and right audio channels more effectively.

Step 1: Configure Kdenlive Timeline Settings

To ensure Kdenlive is set up to handle split audio tracks on the timeline, you must first adjust your global timeline preferences.

1. Open Kdenlive.
2. Go to the top menu and select Settings > Configure Kdenlive (on macOS, select Kdenlive > Preferences).
3. In the configuration window, click on the Timeline tab in the left-hand sidebar.
4. Look for the Audio section.
5. Check the box labeled Split Audio and Video if you want audio to automatically separate from the video track upon import.
6. Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

Step 2: Set Clip Properties to Split Channels

While Kdenlive does not have a single global “always split stereo to mono” checkbox for imports due to varying project needs, you can easily configure imported clips to split their stereo channels into separate mono tracks using the Clip Properties interface.

1. Import your video or audio files into the Project Bin.
2. Right-click the imported clip in the Project Bin and select Clip Properties.
3. In the Clip Properties window, click on the Audio tab.
4. Locate the Channels or Audio Structure settings.
5. Check the option for Split channels. This forces Kdenlive to treat the stereo track as two distinct mono channels (Channel 1 and Channel 2).
6. Click OK.

Step 3: Drag the Clip to the Timeline

Once you have enabled the split channels option in the Clip Properties, drag the clip from the Project Bin onto the timeline. Kdenlive will automatically place the left and right stereo channels onto two separate audio tracks. You can now edit, pan, mute, or apply effects to each mono channel independently.
