Remove Sensor Dust in Kdenlive Using Spot Remover

Sensor dust, lens smudges, and minor blemishes can easily ruin otherwise perfect video footage. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to use Kdenlive’s built-in “Spot Remover” effect to seamlessly hide these unwanted imperfections by interpolating the surrounding pixels over the affected area.

Step 1: Add the Spot Remover Effect

First, import your video footage into Kdenlive and drag it onto your timeline. Navigate to the Effects panel (usually located in the bottom-left or tabbed with your Project Bin). In the search bar of the Effects panel, type “Spot Remover.” Drag and drop the effect directly onto the affected video clip in your timeline.

Step 2: Position the Removal Box

Once the effect is applied, select the video clip on your timeline to open the Effect/Composition Stack properties window. In your Project Monitor, you will see a red bounding box. Click and drag this box directly over the sensor dust or blemish. Alternatively, you can use the X and Y coordinate sliders in the effect settings to precisely position the box.

Step 3: Adjust Size and Width

To make the correction look as natural as possible, you want the removal area to be as small as possible. In the Spot Remover settings, adjust the Width and Height sliders. Shrink the box so that it is just slightly larger than the dust particle or blemish you want to hide.

Step 4: Fine-Tune the Blending

The Spot Remover works by analyzing the pixels immediately surrounding the box and blending them inward to cover the spot. If the correction looks too obvious, adjust the Alpha or blur settings within the effect options (if available in your Kdenlive version) to soften the edges of the box. This helps integrate the patch smoothly into the surrounding texture and lighting.

Step 5: Handle Camera Movement

• For Sensor Dust and Lens Smudges: Because sensor dust is physically on your camera hardware, the spot will remain in the exact same position relative to the frame, even if the camera pans or tilts. In this case, you do not need to animate the effect.
• For Blemishes on Moving Subjects: If you are removing a blemish on a moving object or person, you will need to use keyframes. Click the stopwatch icon next to the X/Y position parameters in the effect stack to enable keyframing, then adjust the position of the box at different points in the timeline to track the movement of the blemish.
