Kdenlive RGB Parade: How to Balance Video Exposure

Balancing video exposure and color temperature by eye can lead to inconsistent results depending on your monitor’s calibration. Fortunately, Kdenlive’s built-in RGB Parade monitor provides an objective, visual way to analyze your footage’s color channels. This guide explains how to open the RGB Parade, interpret its waveforms, and use color correction tools to quickly balance your video’s highlights, midtones, and shadows.

Step 1: Open the RGB Parade Scope

To begin analyzing your footage, you need to display the RGB Parade monitor in your workspace: 1. Open Kdenlive and select the clip you want to analyze on your timeline. 2. Go to the top menu and select View > Scopes > RGB Parade. 3. A new panel will appear in your interface, displaying three separate waveform graphs side-by-side representing the Red, Green, and Blue channels of your video.

Step 2: Understand the RGB Parade Layout

The RGB Parade shows the distribution of color intensity across your frame from left to right: * The X-axis (Horizontal): Maps directly to the horizontal pixels in your video frame (left to right). * The Y-axis (Vertical): Represents brightness/luminance intensity, usually scaled from 0 (absolute black/shadows) to 255 or 100% (absolute white/highlights). * Analyzing Balance: If your video has a neutral white wall, the waveforms for Red, Green, and Blue should sit at the exact same height on the vertical scale. If the Red waveform is higher than the others in that area, your shot has a warm, reddish color cast.

Step 3: Apply the Lift, Gamma, Gain Effect

To adjust the exposure and color channels, you need to apply a color correction effect: 1. Go to the Effects tab. 2. Search for Lift, Gamma, Gain (sometimes categorized under Color and Image Correction). 3. Drag and drop the effect onto your timeline clip.
