Kdenlive Multicam Editing Workflow Guide

Multicam editing in Kdenlive allows you to synchronize multiple camera angles of the same event and switch between them in real-time during playback. This guide covers the essential steps to prepare your footage, synchronize your tracks, enable multicam mode, and perform real-time cuts to streamline your multi-angle video projects.

Step 1: Import and Organize Your Footage

Begin by importing all your video and audio files into the Project Bin. For a smooth workflow, create a dedicated video track in the timeline for each camera angle. Drag each camera’s footage onto its own track, stacking them vertically (e.g., Camera A on Track V1, Camera B on Track V2, and Camera C on Track V3).

Step 2: Synchronize the Tracks

Before editing, all tracks must be perfectly aligned in time. Kdenlive offers two primary ways to achieve this:

Step 3: Enable Multicam Mode

Once your tracks are synced, you need to activate the multicam interface:

  1. Go to the top menu and select Tool > Multicam (or press the G key, which is the default shortcut).
  2. Your Project Monitor will split into a grid, displaying previews of all active video tracks simultaneously.
  3. Each preview window in the grid corresponds to a track number.

Step 4: Perform the Edit

With Multicam mode active, you can cut between cameras in real-time as the project plays:

  1. Position the playhead at the start of your multicam sequence.
  2. Press Spacebar to play the timeline.
  3. To switch to a different camera angle, press the corresponding number key on your keyboard (e.g., press 1 for Track 1, 2 for Track 2) or simply click on the desired camera preview window in the Project Monitor.
  4. Kdenlive will automatically perform a cut on the active track at the playback playhead position, hiding the upper tracks to reveal the selected angle.

Step 5: Refine the Cuts

After completing your real-time pass, press G again to exit Multicam mode and return to the standard editing interface. You can now fine-tune your edits:
