Kdenlive Defish Settings for Custom Drone Lenses
Wide-angle lenses on drone cameras often produce significant barrel distortion, resulting in a curved “fisheye” effect on horizons and straight structures. This article explains how to locate, apply, and configure the “Defish” effect parameters in Kdenlive to correct this distortion for custom drone camera lenses, helping you achieve flat, natural-looking aerial footage.
Step 1: Add the Defish Effect to Your Footage
To begin correcting your drone footage, import your video clip into the Kdenlive timeline. Open the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left or side panel) and search for “Defish” or “Lens Correction”. Drag and drop the effect directly onto your video clip in the timeline. Once applied, the parameter controls will appear in the Effect/Composition Stack window.
Step 2: Understand the Key Parameters
To configure the effect for a custom or non-standard drone lens, you must manually adjust the following parameters:
- Amount (or Strength): This is the primary control for correcting the curve. For drone footage with barrel distortion (where the center bulges outward), you will typically need to adjust this parameter to bend the edges in the opposite direction.
- Scale (Zoom): Correcting fisheye distortion pulls the corners of the video inward, which often leaves blank black borders around the edges of your frame. Increasing the scale slightly crops the image to eliminate these black bars.
- X and Y Center: These parameters define the optical center of the lens. While most drone cameras have a centered lens, custom mounts or slight sensor misalignments may require you to shift the center horizontally (X) or vertically (Y) for perfect correction.
Step 3: Align and Fine-Tune the Correction
To get the most accurate results for your custom lens, find a frame in your video that contains a clear horizontal reference, such as the horizon line or a straight building edge near the top or bottom of the frame.
- Move the playhead to this reference frame.
- Slowly adjust the Amount slider until the curved horizon line becomes perfectly flat and parallel with the top of the monitor.
- If the horizon bends upward at the ends, increase the correction; if it bends downward, decrease it.
- Adjust the Scale slider just enough so that the black corners disappear from the preview window.
Step 4: Save as a Custom Preset
Since drone cameras use fixed focal length lenses, the exact settings you find will remain consistent for all future footage shot with that specific camera. To save time on future edits:
- Click the Menu icon (three horizontal lines or a gear icon) in the Defish effect header within the Effect Stack.
- Select Save Effect.
- Name the preset after your specific drone model or custom lens (e.g., “GoPro Hero 11 Linear” or “Custom 2.1mm Drone Lens”).
You can now drag and drop this custom preset onto any future footage shot with that camera for instant lens correction.
