Kdenlive Custom Exposure with Brightness Keyframes

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to apply the “Brightness” effect in Kdenlive and manipulate its keyframes using non-linear curves. By transitioning from standard linear keyframes to smooth, non-linear interpolation, you can create natural-looking custom exposure ramps, organic light fades, and dynamic lighting transitions directly in your video timeline.

Step 1: Apply the Brightness Effect

First, import your video clip into the Kdenlive timeline. Open the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left pane) and search for “Brightness”. Drag and drop the Brightness (Keyframable) effect directly onto your video clip. Once applied, the effect options will appear in the Effect/Composition Stack panel.

Step 2: Enable Keyframing

In the Effect Stack panel, locate the Brightness parameter slider. To enable keyframes, click the clock icon (toggle keyframes) next to the parameter. This action opens the keyframe ruler directly below the slider, allowing you to plot exposure changes over time.

Step 3: Plot Your Exposure Points

Move the timeline playhead to the timestamp where you want the exposure change to begin, and click the Add Keyframe button (the “+” icon) in the keyframe ruler. Next, move the playhead to where you want the exposure peak or transition to end, and add a second keyframe. Adjust the brightness slider value for each keyframe to establish your custom exposure levels.

Step 4: Convert Keyframes to Non-Linear (Smooth) Curves

By default, Kdenlive transitions between keyframes using a straight, linear path, which can look artificial. To create a custom, organic exposure curve: 1. Right-click on the keyframe node you wish to alter within the keyframe ruler. 2. Hover over Keyframe Type (or interpolation mode). 3. Select Smooth (or Spline/Bezier depending on your Kdenlive version).

This changes the transition from a rigid line to a non-linear curve, slowing down the acceleration at the start and end of the exposure shift (an ease-in/ease-out effect).

Step 5: Fine-Tune the Exposure Ramp

To customize the curve further, switch the keyframe panel view to the Keyframe Curve editor tab (the graph icon next to the timeline). Here, you can visually inspect the curve. Drag the keyframe nodes up or down to adjust brightness intensity, or left and right to adjust the timing, ensuring the exposure matches the natural pacing of your footage.
