Isolate Luma Range with Kdenlive Lift Gain Gamma

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to isolate and adjust specific luminance (luma) ranges in Kdenlive using the “Lift/Gamma/Gain” color correction tool. By understanding how these three parameters target different exposure levels, you can precisely color grade and manipulate the shadows, midtones, and highlights of your video footage.

Step 1: Apply the Lift/Gamma/Gain Effect

To begin, import your video clip into the Kdenlive timeline. Go to the Effects tab, search for “Lift/Gamma/Gain” (often categorized under Color and Image Correction), and drag the effect onto your clip. This tool provides three color wheels and corresponding sliders representing different luminance ranges.

Step 2: Understand the Luma Ranges

The “Lift/Gamma/Gain” tool isolates the luma ranges of your footage into three distinct bands: * Lift (Shadows): Controls the darkest areas of the image. Adjusting Lift isolates and alters the black levels and deep shadows without significantly affecting the highlights. * Gamma (Midtones): Targets the middle exposure values, which usually contain skin tones and the bulk of the image detail. * Gain (Highlights): Controls the brightest areas of the image. Step 3: Monitor the Isolation with Video Scopes

These scopes display the brightness levels of your clip from 0 (pure black/floor) to 100 (pure white/ceiling).
