How to Use Swirl Effect in Kdenlive

Adding a spinning distortion to your video clips can create a mesmerizing psychedelic look, transition, or whirlpool effect. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step tutorial on how to locate, apply, and customize the “Swirl” video effect within Kdenlive to achieve a dynamic warping animation on your footage.

Step 1: Add Your Clip to the Timeline

Open your Kdenlive project and drag the video clip you want to edit from the Project Bin onto the timeline. Make sure the clip is selected so you can apply effects to it.

Step 2: Locate the Swirl Effect

Navigate to the Effects tab (typically located in the left or bottom-left panel). In the search bar at the top of the Effects panel, type Swirl. You can also find it manually by browsing through the Distort category.

Step 3: Apply the Effect to Your Clip

Click and hold the Swirl effect from the list, then drag and drop it directly onto your video clip in the timeline. Alternatively, with your timeline clip selected, you can double-click the Swirl effect in the panel to apply it automatically.

Step 4: Adjust the Swirl Parameters

With your clip selected, look at the Effect/Composition Stack panel (usually on the top right). Here, you will see the customizable properties for the Swirl effect:

Step 5: Animate the Swirl (Optional)

To make the spinning distortion dynamic—such as starting from a normal state and gradually twisting—you can use keyframes: 1. Click the Show/Hide Keyframes icon (the clock icon) next to the effect parameters. 2. Position the playhead at the start of your transition and set the Angle to 0. 3. Move the playhead forward in time, double-click the keyframe timeline to add a new keyframe, and increase the Angle and Radius values. 4. Preview the timeline to ensure the twisting animation transitions smoothly.
