How to Use Ripple Delete in Kdenlive

The ripple delete function in Kdenlive is an essential time-saving feature that allows you to remove clips or empty gaps from your timeline while automatically shifting all subsequent media backward to close the resulting space. This article explains how ripple delete works, how to delete clips and gaps using this method, and how to use Kdenlive’s Ripple tool to maintain synchronization across your video projects.

Understanding Ripple Delete

In standard video editing, deleting a clip from the timeline leaves an empty gap behind. You then have to manually select and drag every subsequent clip forward to close the gap. Ripple delete automates this process. When you perform a ripple delete, Kdenlive removes the targeted clip or gap and instantly pulls all remaining clips on the timeline to the left, seamlessly maintaining the continuity of your edit without manual realignment.

How to Ripple Delete a Clip

To remove a clip and automatically close the gap it leaves behind, use the following steps:

  1. Select the clip on the timeline that you want to remove.
  2. Right-click the selected clip.
  3. Select Delete Clip and Space from the context menu.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Delete (or Shift + Backspace on some operating systems) after selecting the clip to perform the action instantly.

How to Ripple Delete a Gap

If you already have an empty space on your timeline that you want to close, you can ripple delete the gap itself:

  1. Right-click the empty space (the gap) between two clips on a track.
  2. Select Remove Space from the dropdown menu.

Kdenlive will immediately slide all clips to the right of the gap backward until they connect with the clip on the left.

Using the Ripple Tool Mode

Kdenlive also features a dedicated Ripple Tool that alters how normal edits behave. When this mode is active, trimming the edge of one clip will automatically move all adjacent clips to prevent gaps from forming.

To enable the Ripple Tool: * Click the Ripple Tool icon in the timeline toolbar (which looks like a resize icon with an arrow pointing right). * Alternatively, press the R key on your keyboard to toggle this mode.

While the Ripple Tool is active, any trimming, cutting, or adjusting of clips will automatically “ripple” down the timeline, keeping your entire edit compact and gap-free.
