How to Use Markers in Kdenlive for Precise Editing
Using timeline markers in Kdenlive is an essential technique for precise video editing, allowing you to flag specific moments, align audio with video, and organize your project. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to add, edit, and navigate both timeline guides and clip markers in Kdenlive to streamline your editing workflow.
Understanding the Difference: Guides vs. Clip Markers
Kdenlive uses two types of markers for precision editing: * Guides (Timeline Markers): These exist globally on the timeline ruler at the top of your workspace. They do not move when you move individual clips. * Clip Markers: These are attached directly to a specific video or audio clip. If you move the clip, the marker moves with it.
How to Add Timeline Guides
Timeline guides are best for marking general sections of your video, such as intros, transitions, or music beats.
- Position the Playhead: Drag the playhead (the vertical red line) to the exact frame where you want to place the guide.
- Add the Guide:
- Press the keyboard shortcut G (default for adding a guide).
- Alternatively, right-click on the timeline ruler (the timecode bar at the top of the timeline) and select Add Guide.
- Label the Guide: Double-click the newly created guide flag on the ruler, type a descriptive name, choose a color, and click OK.
How to Add Clip Markers
Clip markers are ideal for marking specific actions within a clip, such as a hand gesture, a spoken word, or a camera flash.
- Select the Clip: Click on the clip in your timeline or double-click it in the Project Bin to open it in the Clip Monitor.
- Position the Playhead: Move the playhead to the exact moment within the clip.
- Add the Marker:
- Press the keyboard shortcut M.
- Alternatively, right-click the clip in the timeline, hover over Markers, and select Add Marker.
- Name the Marker: In the pop-up window, enter a name, description, and assign a color to categorize the marker.
Editing and Managing Markers
Once added, you can easily modify or delete your markers to keep your timeline clean.
- Move a Guide: Click and drag the guide flag along the timeline ruler.
- Edit a Guide or Marker: Double-click the marker/guide to change its name, color, or precise timecode.
- Delete a Guide: Right-click the guide on the ruler and select Delete Guide, or select Delete All Guides to clear the timeline.
- Delete a Clip Marker: Right-click the clip, go to Markers, and select Delete Marker.
Navigating and Snapping to Markers
To get the most out of your markers, use them for navigation and snapping.
- Snapping: Ensure the “Snap” tool is enabled (the magnet icon above the timeline, or press Home). When dragging clips, they will magnetically snap to your guides and markers for perfect alignment.
- Quick Jump (Guides): Use Ctrl + Right Arrow to jump to the next guide, and Ctrl + Left Arrow to jump to the previous guide.
- Quick Jump (Clip Markers): Select the clip and press Alt + Right Arrow or Alt + Left Arrow to hop between its internal markers.
