How to Use Kdenlive Render Queue for Batch Export
The render queue in Kdenlive is a powerful feature designed to streamline your post-production workflow by allowing you to export multiple video projects sequentially without manual intervention. This article explains how the render queue works, how to add projects to it using rendering scripts, and how to manage your batch exports efficiently to save time and computing resources.
Understanding the Render Queue
Instead of rendering a single video and waiting for it to finish before starting the next, Kdenlive’s render queue allows you to stack multiple export jobs. The software processes these jobs one after another. This is particularly useful for creators editing multiple videos at once, as you can set up all your exports and let them run overnight or while you are away from your computer.
How to Add Projects to the Render Queue
To queue a project for batch rendering, you do not use the standard “Render to File” button. Instead, you use Kdenlive’s scripting capability:
- Open the Render Dialog: With your project open,
click the Render button in the toolbar or press
Ctrl + Enter. - Configure Export Settings: Select your desired output format, destination folder, and render preset.
- Generate a Render Script: Instead of clicking “Render to File,” click the Generate Script button at the bottom of the dialog. Kdenlive will save a small script file containing all the instructions needed to render your video.
- Access the Queue: Once the script is generated, Kdenlive automatically opens the Queue tab in the Render window, showing your newly added job.
Managing Batch Exports
You can repeat the “Generate Script” process for as many different projects or timelines as you need. Each one will appear as a separate line item in the Render Queue tab.
- Adding External Projects: In the Queue tab, you can
manually add previously saved Kdenlive project files
(
.kdenlive) or external render scripts directly by clicking the Add Project button. - Starting the Queue: Click the Start Queue button to begin the rendering process. Kdenlive will render the first project, and upon completion, immediately start the next.
- Controlling the Jobs: You can pause, resume, or delete jobs from the queue at any time.
- Post-Render Actions: Kdenlive allows you to set post-render behaviors, such as playing a sound when finished or shutting down the computer automatically once the entire queue is processed.
By offloading the rendering process to the queue, you free up your creative energy and keep your computer productive during downtime.
