How to Use Kdenlive Charcoal Effect for Sketch Video

Transforming your standard video footage into an artistic, hand-drawn charcoal sketch is a simple process in the Kdenlive video editor. This guide provides a quick, step-by-step walkthrough on how to locate, apply, and customize the “Charcoal” video effect to instantly convert your realistic clips into stylized pencil or charcoal art.

Step 1: Add Your Footage to the Timeline

Open Kdenlive and import your video clip into the Project Bin. Drag and drop the clip onto your target video track on the timeline.

Step 2: Locate the Charcoal Effect

Navigate to the Effects tab, which is usually located in the bottom-left or top-left panel of the default workspace. If you do not see it, enable it by going to View > Effects in the top menu. In the search bar at the top of the Effects panel, type “Charcoal”. The effect will appear under the Artistic or Image Adjustment category.

Step 3: Apply the Effect to Your Clip

Click on the Charcoal effect and drag it directly onto your video clip in the timeline. Alternatively, you can double-click the effect while your timeline clip is selected. Your video preview in the Project Monitor will instantly update to show a black-and-white sketch outline.

Because the Charcoal effect relies on edge detection, low-contrast videos can sometimes look muddy. To make the sketch lines pop, search for the Brightness or Contrast effect in the Effects panel and drag it onto your clip above the Charcoal effect in the Effect Stack. Increasing the contrast before the Charcoal effect is applied will result in cleaner, more defined sketch lines.
