How to Use Extract Tool in Kdenlive

Editing videos often requires removing unwanted footage without leaving empty spaces in your timeline. This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to use the “Extract” tool in Kdenlive to cut out a specific section of a clip and automatically close the resulting gap, saving you from manually shifting your media.

Step 1: Define the Timeline Zone

To remove a specific section, you must first define the “In” and “Out” points on the timeline ruler: 1. Position the playhead at the start of the section you want to remove and press the I key on your keyboard to set the In point. 2. Move the playhead to the end of the unwanted section and press the O key to set the Out point. 3. You will see a highlighted zone appear on the timeline ruler representing the area to be deleted.

Step 2: Target the Correct Tracks

Ensure that the track containing your clip is active. If you want to extract the zone across all tracks, keep them unlocked. If you only want to affect a specific track, lock the other tracks by clicking the lock icon on their track headers to prevent them from being altered.

Step 3: Extract the Zone and Close the Gap
