How to Use Edge Glow in Kdenlive

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to apply and configure the “Edge Glow” filter on high-contrast video clips within the Kdenlive video editor. You will learn how to locate the effect, apply it to your timeline, and adjust its parameters to achieve a striking, stylized outline effect on high-contrast footage.

Step 1: Prepare Your Footage on the Timeline

Open Kdenlive and import your high-contrast video clip into the Project Bin. Drag and drop the clip onto a video track on your timeline. High-contrast footage—such as dark backgrounds with bright subjects—works best for this effect, as the filter relies on distinct luminance differences to detect and highlight edges.

Step 2: Locate the Edge Glow Filter

Navigate to the Effects panel, which is typically located in the bottom-left or center-left tab of the default workspace. In the search bar at the top of the Effects panel, type “Edge Glow” or “Glow”. You can also locate it manually by browsing through the Stylize or Alpha, Mask and Keying categories.

Step 3: Apply the Filter to Your Clip

Click and drag the Edge Glow filter from the Effects panel and drop it directly onto your video clip on the timeline. Alternatively, you can select the clip on your timeline first, then double-click the Edge Glow effect in the panel to apply it.

Step 4: Adjust the Filter Parameters

With the video clip selected, go to the Effect/Composition Stack panel (usually in the top-right or center-right of the screen) to customize the filter settings:

Step 5: Preview and Refine

Play the timeline in the Project Monitor to preview the results in real-time. If the effect appears too harsh on your high-contrast video, slightly reduce the intensity or increase the threshold. Once you are satisfied with the look, you can proceed to render your project.
