How to Use Chroma Hold in Kdenlive

This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step tutorial on how to use the “Chroma Hold” effect in Kdenlive to isolate a single color in your video while turning the rest of the footage grayscale. You will learn how to locate the effect, select your target color using the eyedropper tool, and fine-tune the settings to achieve a clean, professional selective colorization look.

Step 1: Add Your Footage to the Timeline

Open Kdenlive and import the video clip you want to edit into your Project Bin. Drag and drop the clip onto your timeline.

Step 2: Locate and Apply the Chroma Hold Effect

  1. Go to the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left or top-right panel). If you cannot see it, enable it by going to the top menu and selecting View > Effects.
  2. In the Effects search bar, type Chroma Hold.
  3. Drag the Chroma Hold effect from the list and drop it directly onto your video clip in the timeline.

Step 3: Select the Color You Want to Keep

  1. Select the video clip on your timeline to open its properties in the Effect/Composition Stack panel.
  2. Locate the Color parameter within the Chroma Hold effect settings.
