How to Use Bezier Spline Tracking in Kdenlive

Masking in video editing often requires smooth, precise path adjustments to follow moving objects seamlessly. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the “Bezier Spline” tracking mode within Kdenlive’s Rotoscoping effect, enabling you to create fluid, curved mask paths that accurately track motion without jagged transitions.

Step 1: Apply the Rotoscoping Effect

To begin masking, you must first apply the Rotoscoping tool to your video clip. 1. Import your video clip into the Kdenlive timeline. 2. Go to the Effects panel (usually located on the left or bottom-left of the screen). 3. Search for Rotoscoping in the search bar. 4. Drag and drop the Rotoscoping effect directly onto your timeline clip.

Step 2: Draw the Bezier Spline Mask

Once the effect is applied, you can draw your mask in the Project Monitor using Bezier curves for smooth edges. 1. Select the clip in your timeline to display the Rotoscoping settings in the Properties panel. 2. In the Project Monitor, left-click to start drawing points around the object you want to mask. 3. To create a curved Bezier spline instead of a sharp angle, click and drag your mouse when creating a point. This action pulls out Bezier handles, allowing you to adjust the curvature of the boundary. 4. To close the mask, right-click anywhere in the Project Monitor. 5. To adjust any point afterward, click on the node and drag the Bezier handles to refine the curve.

Step 3: Enable Keyframing for Motion Tracking

To make the Bezier spline follow a moving object, you must animate the mask using keyframes. 1. Move the timeline playhead to the beginning of the action. 2. In the Rotoscoping effect settings, ensure the keyframe ruler is active. A keyframe is automatically created for your starting position. 3. Move the playhead forward in the timeline by a few frames. 4. In the Project Monitor, click and drag the entire mask or individual Bezier points to reposition them over the moving object. Kdenlive will automatically create a new keyframe. 5. Kdenlive’s Bezier interpolation will smoothly transition the shape and position of the mask between these keyframes.

For complex movement, you can combine the Bezier mask with Kdenlive’s automatic Motion Tracker. 1. Apply the Motion Tracker effect to your clip first and analyze the target object’s movement to generate tracking data. 2. Right-click the tracking data in the Motion Tracker effect stack and copy it. 3. Go to your Rotoscoping effect, click the options icon in the keyframe header, and select the import option to apply the tracking data to your Bezier spline mask. This automates the movement of your smooth mask, reducing the need for manual keyframing.
