How to Thicken Vocals in Kdenlive with Chorus

Achieving a full, rich vocal sound is a common goal in audio editing, and Kdenlive offers the tools to do this directly within your video project. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to apply and configure the “Chorus” audio effect in Kdenlive to thicken vocal recordings, turning thin, single-mic captures into wider, multi-layered sounding tracks.

Step 1: Add Your Audio to the Timeline

1. Open Kdenlive and import your audio or video clip into the Project Bin.
2. Drag and drop the clip onto an audio track in the timeline.

Step 2: Find and Apply the Chorus Effect

1. Open the Effects tab (if it is not visible, enable it by going to the top menu and selecting View > Effects).
2. In the search bar of the Effects panel, type Chorus. Kdenlive utilizes LADSPA plugins, so you will see options like “Chorus” or “Multichorus.”
3. Drag the Chorus effect and drop it directly onto your audio clip in the timeline.

Step 3: Configure the Effect Parameters

With the audio clip selected in your timeline, the effect settings will appear in the Effect/Composition Stack panel. To achieve a natural thickening effect rather than an obvious, synthetic modulation, adjust the parameters using these guidelines:

• Frequency / LFO Rate: Keep this setting low, ideally between 0.5 Hz and 1.5 Hz. Setting this too high will cause the pitch to wobble unnaturally.
• Modulation Depth: Set this to a moderate level, around 20% to 40%. This determines how much the duplicated voices deviate in pitch from the original.
• Dry / Wet Mix: This controls the balance between the original recording (Dry) and the chorus effect (Wet). For a subtle thickening effect, the original vocal should remain dominant. Aim for a mix of 70% Dry and 30% Wet.
