How to Render a Specific Timeline Zone in Kdenlive

Rendering only a portion of your project in Kdenlive is an efficient way to export quick drafts, preview complex effects, or isolate specific clips. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to define a custom zone on your timeline using keyboard shortcuts or the timeline ruler, and how to configure your export settings to render only that selected area instead of the entire project.

Step 1: Define the Selection Zone on the Timeline

Before rendering, you must tell Kdenlive which part of the timeline you want to export by setting “In” and “Out” points.

  1. Move the playhead to the exact frame where you want your video clip to start.
  2. Press the I key on your keyboard to set the In Point.
  3. Move the playhead to the frame where you want your video clip to end.
  4. Press the O key on your keyboard to set the Out Point.

You will see a colored bar (usually blue or green, depending on your system theme) appear in the timeline ruler at the top of your tracks, indicating the selected zone.

Step 2: Open the Render Dialog

Once your zone is defined, you need to open the export menu.

  1. Click the Render button (the red circle icon) in the top toolbar, or go to Project > Render in the top menu.
  2. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Enter (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Enter (macOS).

Step 3: Select the “Selected Zone” Option

By default, Kdenlive is set to render the entire timeline. You must change this setting to export only your selection.

  1. In the Render window, look at the bottom-left section under the Render project options.
  2. Change the selection from Full project to Selected zone.
  3. Choose your preferred output folder, file name, and video format (such as MP4 or WebM) from the presets list.
  4. Click Render to File to begin the export process.

Kdenlive will now process and export only the video and audio contained within your specified In and Out markers.
