How to Record Voiceover in Kdenlive

Recording narration directly over your video edits can save significant time during the post-production process. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step tutorial on how to configure your microphone and record audio directly into the Kdenlive timeline, allowing you to capture voiceovers seamlessly without needing external audio recording software.

Step 1: Configure Your Audio Input Device Before recording, you must ensure Kdenlive is connected to your microphone. 1. Open Kdenlive and navigate to the top menu. 2. Go to Settings > Configure Kdenlive (on macOS, go to Kdenlive > Preferences). 3. Select the Capture tab from the left-hand menu. 4. Ensure that the capture system (such as FFmpeg, ALSA, PulseAudio, or WASAPI) is correctly selected based on your operating system. 5. Choose your preferred microphone from the Device or Audio device dropdown menu. 6. Click Apply and then OK to save the settings.

Step 2: Enable Recording Controls on the Timeline To record directly onto a track, you need to display the recording interface on the timeline. 1. Identify the audio track where you want the voiceover to be placed. 2. Right-click on the track header (the area on the far left of the timeline containing the track name and mute buttons). 3. Select Show Record Controls from the context menu. A microphone icon and a small level meter will appear on the track header.

Step 3: Prepare and Start Recording With your microphone configured and the controls visible, you are ready to record. 1. Position the timeline playhead (the vertical guide line) at the exact timestamp where you want your voiceover to begin. 2. Click the red Record button (microphone icon) on your chosen audio track. 3. Kdenlive will begin playing the timeline visual preview while simultaneously recording your voice. Speak clearly into your microphone. 4. To finish recording, click the red Record button again, or press the Spacebar on your keyboard to stop playback and recording.

Once stopped, the recorded audio file will automatically appear as a new clip on your timeline at the designated position. The audio file is also automatically saved to your local storage and added to your Project Bin for easy management.
