How to Preview Media in Kdenlive
Previewing your video and audio clips before placing them on the timeline is an essential step in efficient video editing. This guide explains how to use Kdenlive’s Clip Monitor to preview source media, select specific portions of a clip using in and out points, and manage your assets directly from the Project Bin.
Step 1: Import Your Media into the Project Bin
Before you can preview any media, you must add it to your project. Drag and drop your video, audio, or image files into the Project Bin window (usually located in the top-left corner of the default interface), or click the Add Clip or Folder button.
Step 2: Load the Clip into the Clip Monitor
To view and listen to your media: 1. Locate the clip you want to preview in the Project Bin. 2. Left-click once on the clip to select it, or double-click it. 3. The media will automatically load into the Clip Monitor panel (usually located in the top-middle or top-right of the interface, right next to the Project Monitor).
Note: Make sure you are looking at the Clip Monitor tab and not the Project Monitor tab. The Clip Monitor plays individual source files, while the Project Monitor plays your active timeline assembly.
Step 3: Control Playback
Once the clip is loaded in the Clip Monitor, you can control playback using the on-screen buttons or keyboard shortcuts: * Play/Pause: Press the Spacebar or click the Play button under the monitor. * Scrubbing: Click and drag the playhead (the vertical line on the seek bar) to quickly scan through the footage. * J-K-L Keys: Use L to fast-forward, J to rewind, and K to pause. Pressing J or L multiple times increases the playback speed. * Frame-by-Frame: Use the Left and Right Arrow keys to move backward or forward by a single frame.
Step 4: Set In and Out Points (Optional)
If you only want to use a specific portion of the clip on your timeline, you can define a “zone” within the Clip Monitor: 1. Play the clip to the point where you want your segment to start and press the I key (or click the Set Zone In icon) to set the start point. 2. Play the clip to where you want the segment to end and press the O key (or click the Set Zone Out icon) to set the end point. 3. The selected area will be highlighted on the clip’s timeline.
Step 5: Add the Previewed Clip to the Timeline
Once you have previewed the clip (and optionally set your In and Out points), you can bring it into your project timeline: * Drag and Drop: Click inside the video screen of the Clip Monitor and drag it directly onto an empty track in your timeline. If you set a zone, only the selected portion will be dragged. * Audio or Video Only: If you hover your mouse near the bottom of the Clip Monitor, small icons for “Video Only” (filmstrip) and “Audio Only” (waveform) will appear. Dragging from these icons allows you to split the media before putting it on the timeline.
