How to Pan Audio Left to Right in Kdenlive

Panning audio from left to right in Kdenlive is a simple process that allows you to create spatial sound effects or transition audio across the stereo field. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to locate the panning effect, apply it to your audio clip, and use keyframes to smoothly shift the sound from the left channel to the right channel.

Step 1: Add Your Audio to the Timeline

Import your video or audio clip into Kdenlive and drag it onto an audio track in your timeline. Click on the clip to select it.

Step 2: Locate and Apply the Pan Effect

  1. Open the Effects tab. If you do not see it, go to the top menu and select View > Effects.
  2. In the search bar of the Effects panel, type Pan.
  3. Locate the Pan effect (usually found under the “Audio Channels” category).
  4. Drag and drop the Pan effect directly onto your audio clip in the timeline.

Step 3: Configure Keyframes for the Pan Transition

To make the sound move from left to right over time, you must use keyframes in the Effect/Composition Stack panel.

  1. Select the audio clip on your timeline to display its effects in the Effect Stack panel.
  2. Move your timeline playhead to the exact frame where you want the left-to-right transition to begin.
  3. In the Pan effect controls, drag the position slider completely to the left.
  4. Click the Show/Hide Keyframes clock icon next to the Pan parameter to activate keyframing. This will automatically create your first keyframe at the current playhead position.
  5. Move the timeline playhead to the point where you want the panning transition to end.
  6. Click the Add Keyframe button (the “+” icon) in the effect stack keyframe ruler.
  7. Drag the Pan slider completely to the right.

Step 4: Preview the Results

Play back your timeline. You should hear the audio start in your left speaker or headphone earcup and smoothly transition over to the right side as the playhead moves between the two keyframes.
