How to Mute or Hide a Track in Kdenlive
When editing video in Kdenlive, you often need to temporarily disable specific audio or video tracks to focus on other elements, compare edits, or improve preview playback performance. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to quickly mute audio tracks and hide video tracks directly from your timeline.
How to Hide a Video Track
To temporarily hide a video track so that its contents do not appear in the Project Monitor:
- Go to the timeline on the left side of your screen where the track headers are located (e.g., Video 1, Video 2).
- Locate the Eye icon on the specific video track header you want to hide.
- Click the Eye icon. When the icon is crossed out or dimmed, the track is hidden, and its visual content will not be rendered in the preview.
- To show the track again, simply click the Eye icon a second time.
How to Mute an Audio Track
To temporarily silence an audio track during playback:
- Locate the audio track headers in the timeline (e.g., Audio 1, Audio 2).
- Find the Speaker icon on the header of the track you wish to mute.
- Click the Speaker icon. When clicked, the icon will change to show that the track is muted (usually depicted with a diagonal line through the speaker).
- Click the Speaker icon again to restore the audio.
Disabling Individual Clips (Alternative Method)
If you want to mute or hide a single clip rather than an entire track:
- Right-click the specific clip in the timeline.
- Uncheck the Disable timeline clip option in the context menu. This will grey out the clip and temporarily disable both its audio and video.
- To re-enable the clip, right-click it again and select Disable timeline clip to toggle it back on.
