How to Loop Video in Kdenlive Using Zone Markers

In this guide, you will learn how to easily create a loopable video segment in Kdenlive using timeline zone markers. By defining a specific timeline zone with In and Out points and enabling the loop playback feature, you can repeatedly preview a specific section of your video project or render just that selected portion.

Step 1: Define the Loop Zone on the Timeline

To loop a specific segment of your video, you must first define the “Zone” (the start and end points) on the Kdenlive timeline.

  1. Drag your video clip onto the timeline.
  2. Move the timeline playhead to the exact frame where you want your loop to begin.
  3. Press the I key on your keyboard (or click the Set Zone In button) to establish the starting marker.
  4. Move the playhead to the frame where you want the loop to end.
  5. Press the O key on your keyboard (or click the Set Zone Out button) to establish the ending marker.

You will see a highlighted zone bar appear in the timeline ruler representing your selected segment.

Step 2: Enable Loop Playback

Once your zone is set, you need to configure the Project Monitor to loop the playback of this designated area.

  1. Go to the Project Monitor window (located in the top-right preview panel).
  2. Click the Loop button on the playback control bar (represented by a circular arrow icon). If the button is hidden, right-click on the Project Monitor and select Loop from the context menu, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Space.
  3. Click the Play button (or press Space).

The playhead will now play the defined zone and instantly jump back to the “In” marker once it reaches the “Out” marker, creating a continuous loop.

Step 3: Adjusting or Clearing the Zone

If you need to tweak the loop segment:

Step 4: Rendering the Looped Segment (Optional)

If you want to export only this looped segment as a standalone video file:

  1. Click the Render button in the top toolbar (or press Ctrl + Enter).
  2. In the Render window, locate the Render Project options.
  3. Select the Selected Zone option instead of “Full Project”.
  4. Choose your desired output format and click Render to File.
