How to Invert Video Colors in Kdenlive

Inverting the colors of a video clip is a popular creative effect that can give your footage a stylized, negative, or psychedelic look. This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to easily apply the invert color effect to any video clip using the free, open-source video editor Kdenlive.

Step 1: Import and Add Your Video to the Timeline

First, open Kdenlive and import your video clip into the Project Bin. Once imported, drag and drop the video clip onto your timeline where you want to edit it.

Step 2: Locate the Invert Effect

Navigate to the Effects tab, which is typically located in the bottom-left or top-left panel of the Kdenlive interface. If you cannot see the Effects tab, enable it by going to the top menu and selecting View > Effects.

In the search bar of the Effects panel, type Invert. You will see the Invert effect appear under the “Color and Image Correction” category.

Step 3: Apply the Effect to Your Clip

Click and drag the Invert effect from the Effects panel and drop it directly onto your video clip in the timeline. You will instantly see the colors invert in the Project Monitor.

Step 4: Customize the Inversion Settings (Optional)

With the video clip selected in the timeline, look at the Effect/Composition Stack panel. Here, you can customize how the inversion is applied: * Invert Alpha: Inverts the transparency of the video if it has an alpha channel. * Invert Red/Green/Blue: Allows you to invert individual color channels instead of the entire image for unique, stylized color-grading effects.

You can also toggle the effect on and off using the checkbox next to the effect name in the stack, or adjust the keyframes if you want the inversion to happen gradually over time.
