How to Install Kdenlive on macOS

This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough for installing Kdenlive, a free and open-source video editing software, on macOS. You will learn how to download the official installer, complete the installation process, and configure your macOS security settings to run the application without issues.

Step 1: Download the Kdenlive Installer

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the official Kdenlive website download page.
  2. Locate the macOS section.
  3. Choose the appropriate version for your Mac’s processor:
    • Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) if you have a newer Mac.
    • Intel if you have an older Mac.
  4. Click the link to download the DMG installer file to your computer.

Step 2: Install Kdenlive

  1. Locate the downloaded .dmg file (usually in your Downloads folder) and double-click it to mount the disk image.
  2. A window will appear showing the Kdenlive icon and a shortcut to your Applications folder.
  3. Drag the Kdenlive icon and drop it directly into the Applications folder.
  4. Wait for the copying process to complete, then eject the installer by right-clicking the Kdenlive disk image on your desktop and selecting Eject.

Step 3: Launch and Bypass macOS Security

Because Kdenlive is an open-source project, macOS Gatekeeper may initially block it from opening with a warning that the developer cannot be verified.

  1. Go to your Applications folder.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) the Kdenlive app icon and select Open from the context menu.
  3. A prompt will appear asking if you are sure you want to open it. Click Open.
  4. If the application is blocked entirely, open System Settings (or System Preferences) on your Mac, navigate to Privacy & Security, scroll down to the Security section, and click Open Anyway next to the Kdenlive notification.

Kdenlive is now successfully installed and ready for use on your macOS device.
