How to Import SRT Subtitles in Kdenlive

Importing SRT subtitle files into Kdenlive is a straightforward process that allows you to quickly add captions to your video projects without manually typing them. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough on how to import, position, and edit an external SRT subtitle file directly within the Kdenlive video editing timeline.

Step 1: Open Your Kdenlive Project

Launch Kdenlive and open the project where you want to add the subtitles. Ensure your video and audio tracks are already placed on the timeline.

Step 2: Access the Subtitle Menu

Kdenlive has a dedicated subtitle track that sits at the very top of the timeline. To import your file: 1. Go to the top menu bar and click on Project. 2. Hover over Subtitles in the drop-down menu. 3. Click on Import Subtitle File….

Step 3: Choose and Import the SRT File

A file browser window will appear. 1. Navigate to the folder where your .srt file is saved. 2. Select the file and click Open. 3. In the import settings dialog that appears, you can usually leave the default settings as they are. Click OK to confirm.

The subtitles will now appear on a new, specialized “Subtitle” track at the top of your timeline, automatically aligned to the timestamps defined in the SRT file.

Step 4: Edit and Style Your Subtitles (Optional)

If you need to make changes to the text or the appearance of the subtitles: * Edit Text: Double-click on any subtitle block on the timeline. The Subtitles tool speech bubble panel will open, allowing you to edit the text directly. * Style Subtitles: Click on the Style button (the “A” icon) in the Subtitle panel. Here, you can change the font, size, color, background, and alignment of the text to ensure it is readable against your video background.

Once imported, the subtitles will render dynamically over your video and will be included in your final export.
