How to Import 3D LUTs in Kdenlive
Applying Look-Up Tables (LUTs) is a crucial step in color grading
video footage to achieve a professional, cinematic look. This guide
provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to import
and apply standard 3D LUT files (such as .cube files) using
Kdenlive’s built-in LUT 3D application tool.
Step 1: Prepare Your 3D LUT File
Before starting, ensure your 3D LUT file is in a compatible format. Kdenlive primarily supports the .cube format, which is the industry standard for 3D LUTs. Save your LUT files in an easily accessible folder on your computer.
Step 2: Add Your Video Clip to the Timeline
- Open Kdenlive and import your video footage into the Project Bin.
- Drag and drop the video clip from the Project Bin onto your timeline.
Step 3: Locate and Apply the “LUT 3D” Effect
- Open the Effects tab (if it is not visible, enable it via View > Effects in the top menu).
- In the search bar of the Effects panel, type LUT 3D.
- Drag the LUT 3D effect from the search results and drop it directly onto your video clip in the timeline.
Step 4: Load the LUT File into Kdenlive
- Click on the video clip in your timeline to select it.
- Navigate to the Effect/Composition Stack panel (usually located in the top-right or center-left of the interface) to view the LUT 3D effect settings.
- Click the file browser icon (the folder symbol) next to the “LUT file” path field.
- Locate your
.cubefile in the file explorer, select it, and click Open.
The color grade will immediately apply to your clip in the Project Monitor.
Step 5: Configure the Effect Settings
To get the best visual results, you can adjust the following settings within the LUT 3D effect panel: * Interpolation: Set this to Tetrahedral for the highest quality color mapping, or Trilinear if you need to prioritize system rendering performance. * Amount: Use this slider (if available in your Kdenlive version) to adjust the intensity of the LUT, allowing you to blend the graded look with the original footage.
