How to Find Missing Clips in Kdenlive
When you open a Kdenlive project and find that your media files are offline, it is usually because the source files were moved, renamed, or deleted on your computer. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step solution to quickly locate and relink your missing clips so you can restore your timeline and continue editing without losing any progress.
Method 1: Using the Automatic Search Dialog on Startup
When Kdenlive detects that files are missing upon opening a project, it will automatically open a “Clip Problems” window.
- Identify the missing files: The dialog box will list all the clips that Kdenlive cannot locate.
- Search for the folder: Click on the Search button (or Check Files depending on your Kdenlive version).
- Select the new directory: Browse to the folder where your media files are currently stored and select it.
- Relink the files: Kdenlive will scan the selected folder. If it finds the files with matching names, it will automatically update their paths.
- Apply changes: Click OK or Fix Project to load your timeline with the restored media.
Method 2: Manually Replacing Clips in the Project Bin
If the startup dialog does not appear, or if you need to fix a specific missing clip while already working inside the project, you can relink it manually.
- Locate the clip: Look at the Project Bin (usually in the top-left corner). Missing clips will display a red placeholder icon.
- Right-click the clip: Right-click on the missing video, audio, or image file in the Project Bin.
- Select Replace Clip: From the context menu, click on Replace Clip.
- Browse to the file: A file explorer window will open. Navigate to the new location of your file, select it, and click Open.
- Verify the timeline: The clip will instantly update in both your Project Bin and your editing timeline, retaining all previous cuts and effects.
Tips to Prevent Missing Clips
- Keep files organized: Create a dedicated project folder for every video edit. Keep your project file (.kdenlive) and all associated media (video, audio, assets) inside this single folder.
- Use relative paths: Go to Settings > Configure Kdenlive > Project Defaults and ensure that your project is set to use relative paths. This makes it easier to move the entire project folder to another drive or computer without breaking file links.
