How to Export Subtitles Separately in Kdenlive

This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to export your subtitle tracks as a standalone SRT file in Kdenlive. You will learn how to extract your subtitle data from the timeline and save it independently without rendering the entire video project.

If you have created or edited subtitles using Kdenlive’s native subtitle track, you can easily save them as a separate file (usually in the standard .srt format) to upload to platforms like YouTube or use in external media players.

Follow these steps to export your subtitle file separately:

  1. Open your project: Ensure your Kdenlive project is open and your subtitle track contains the text you wish to export.
  2. Access the Subtitle menu: Go to the top menu bar and click on Project.
  3. Select Export: Hover your mouse over Subtitles in the drop-down menu, and click on Export Subtitle File…
  4. Choose file location: A file browser window will appear. Choose the folder where you want to save the subtitle file.
  5. Name and save your file: Type a name for your subtitle file. Ensure the file extension is set to SubRip (*.srt) and click Save.

Once saved, this standalone .srt file will contain all your subtitle text along with the precise timestamps synced to your video timeline. You can now use this file independently of your rendered video.
