How to Export Kdenlive Project as GIF
This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to export your Kdenlive timeline directly into an animated GIF file. You will learn where to find the correct render presets, how to optimize your project settings for the GIF format, and how to complete the export process without needing external file converters.
Step 1: Open the Render Dialog
Once you have finished editing your project on the timeline, click the Render button in the top toolbar, or press Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on macOS) to open the Render window.
Step 2: Select the GIF Preset
In the Render widget, you need to locate the pre-configured GIF profile: 1. In the left-hand pane of the Render window, expand the Generic category (in some versions, this may be labeled as Generic (MP3, MPG, GIF…)). 2. Scroll down and click on GIF.
Step 3: Configure Output Settings
GIF files can quickly become very large if the resolution and frame rate are too high. To ensure a reasonable file size: * Render Project Zone: If you only need a specific portion of your timeline as a GIF, set the “Render” option at the bottom from Full Project to Selected Zone. Make sure you have set your in and out points on the timeline beforehand. * Adjust Resolution: If your project is in 1080p or 4K, consider scaling it down. You can check the “Rescale” option in the Render dialog and set it to a lower resolution, such as 480p or 720p.
Step 4: Choose File Destination and Export
- In the Output file field at the top of the Render
window, click the folder icon to select where you want to save your file
and give it a name. Ensure the file extension ends in
.gif. - Click the Render to File button at the bottom of the window.
Kdenlive will process the timeline and generate your animated GIF directly to your chosen folder.
