How to Export JPEG Sequence from Kdenlive

Exporting a video clip as a series of individual still images is a highly useful technique for animation, rotoscoping, or extracting high-quality frames for promotional use. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough on how to define a specific zone on your Kdenlive timeline and export only that selected portion as a consecutive sequence of JPEG images.

Step 1: Define Your Timeline Zone

Before exporting, you must tell Kdenlive which part of the timeline you want to convert into images.

  1. Open your project in Kdenlive and locate the section on the timeline you want to export.
  2. Move the playhead to the beginning of the desired section and press I on your keyboard (or click the Set Zone In icon above the timeline) to set the start point.
  3. Move the playhead to the end of the desired section and press O on your keyboard (or click the Set Zone Out icon) to set the end point.
  4. You will see the selected area highlighted on the timeline ruler.

Step 2: Open the Render Menu

Once your zone is defined, you need to open the rendering options.

  1. Click on the Render button in the top toolbar, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on macOS).
  2. The Render dialog window will appear.

Kdenlive has a dedicated preset category for exporting image sequences.

  1. Output file: Click the folder icon to choose the destination folder where your images will be saved. Tip: Create a new, empty folder for this export, as it will generate a large number of individual files.
  2. File Name: Ensure the file name ends with a placeholder for sequential numbering, which Kdenlive usually handles automatically (e.g., filename-%05d.jpg).
  3. Render Source: On the right side of the Render window, change the selection from Full Project to Selected Zone. This ensures Kdenlive only exports the area you highlighted in Step 1.

Step 5: Start the Export

  1. Double-check your settings, resolution, and destination folder.
  2. Click the Render to File button at the bottom of the window.

Kdenlive will process the selected timeline zone frame-by-frame and save each frame as a numbered JPEG image in your designated folder.
