How to Export a Frame as PNG in Kdenlive
This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to extract and export a single high-quality PNG frame from your Kdenlive video project. By using the built-in “Extract Frame” feature in the Project Monitor, you can quickly save any moment from your timeline as a lossless image file perfect for thumbnails, promotions, or reference.
Step 1: Position the Playhead
Open your project in Kdenlive and navigate to the timeline. Move the playhead (the vertical red cursor) to the exact frame you want to export. You can use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate frame-by-frame for precise positioning.
Step 2: Access the Extract Frame Feature
Ensure you are looking at the Project Monitor (which shows your timeline output) rather than the Clip Monitor.
To export the frame, use one of the following methods: *
Keyboard Shortcut: Press Ctrl +
Shift + I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd
+ Shift + I (macOS). * Right-Click
Menu: Right-click directly on the video inside the Project
Monitor and select Extract Frame… from the context
menu. * Monitor Toolbar: Click the three-line menu icon
(or the gear icon, depending on your Kdenlive version) in the Project
Monitor toolbar and select Extract Frame.
Step 3: Configure the Save Settings
A dialog window will appear. Configure your export settings as
follows: 1. Choose Destination: Browse to the folder
where you want to save the image. 2. Name the File:
Enter a name for your file in the “Name” field. 3. Select
Format: Ensure the file extension is set to .png
(e.g., image.png). This ensures the image is saved in a
lossless, high-quality format. 4. Add to Project
(Optional): If you want to use this newly created image inside
your current Kdenlive project, check the Add to project
box.
Step 4: Save the Image
Click the Save (or OK) button. Kdenlive will immediately render the selected frame at the project’s native resolution and save it as a high-quality PNG file to your specified directory.
