How to Enable Two-Pass Rendering in Kdenlive

Exporting high-quality video in Kdenlive often requires utilizing advanced encoding techniques like two-pass rendering. This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to enable the “Two-Pass” rendering option for variable bitrate (VBR) exports in Kdenlive, helping you achieve the best possible visual quality at efficient file sizes.

Step 1: Open the Render Window

Open your project in Kdenlive. Once your timeline is ready for export, open the Render dialog by clicking the Render button in the top toolbar, or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on macOS).

Step 2: Select a Compatible Format

Two-pass rendering is designed for variable bitrate (VBR) encoding. In the format selection list on the left side of the Render window: 1. Choose a standard video format, such as MP4 (H.264/AAC) or WebM. 2. Ensure you are under the File rendering tab.

Step 3: Switch from Quality to Bitrate Mode

By default, Kdenlive often uses “Constant Quality” (CRF) encoding, which does not utilize two-pass rendering. To enable the two-pass option, you must switch to bitrate-based encoding: 1. Look at the right-hand panel of the Render window under the Encoder speed / Quality section. 2. Change the selection from Quality to Bitrate. 3. Set your desired target video bitrate (e.g., 8000k for 1080p video) and audio bitrate.

Once you have switched the encoding mode to Bitrate, the two-pass option becomes available: 1. Locate the Two Pass (or 2 Pass) checkbox, which is positioned next to the bitrate settings. 2. (Optional) If you want to speed up the process, you can also check Export audio only on second pass if the option is visible, which prevents Kdenlive from processing audio during the first analysis pass.
